Google Earth 5 - More News Roundup
Naturally, the biggest week in Google Earth news history, and I'm on a big trip with limited Internet access! It looks like I won't have time today to do in-depth analysis, but here's a round-up of some of the best new news and observations from other Google Earth experts:- New GPS Support - Google eliminated the Google Earth Plus product in December. The GPS support in Plus is now available in the free version of Google Earth. FreeGeographyTools was probably first in commenting on this, and here's Google's post about it.
- More on Mars - This is Google's post on the new Mars mode in Google Earth 5. The post acknowledges that this project was part of the agreement NASA and Google made a couple of years ago.
- More on Tour Features - The Record Tour is a major new feature in GE 5. Here's Google's post about the Touring. This post is by Googler Dan Barcay who was a prime player in the tour feature development. Lots of interesting tips, links to references, and examples. Here are some observations from design expert Richard Treves, including his review after experimenting with the features.
- UK Snow Animation - James Stafford produces some slick KML using Google Earth 5's new time animation slider. He's taken data during the snowstorm in the UK this week from Twitter to produce an animation showing the number of tweets over time about the snowfall. His post includes a video or the KML which you can load in GE 5.
- World Clock with GE 5 - Barnabu also has developed a cool app taking advantage of GE 5's ability to support Javascript. You can see timezones as an overlay over the Earth, click on a specific time zone and see a running clock for that location. Very slick!
